17 paths and 3 rivers
The slow, satisfying accumulation of a life spent exploring.
Not racing. Not competing. Just going everywhere, eventually.
Where to start
Start with one of Sussex's 17 paths and 3 rivers, or a whole set. Every outing counts, wherever you go.
The National Trail along the South Downs from Winchester to Eastbourne, about 165 km.
A long walk round the edge of Sussex from Emsworth to Rye, about 225 km.
A walk across the High Weald from Horsham to Rye, about 155 km.
The Sussex coast on the King Charles III England Coast Path, about 125 km in all: East Head to Shoreham, and Shoreham to Eastbourne.
Three walks across the Weald, two of them down to the sea, about 275 km in all: the Vanguard Way, the Sussex Ouse Valley Way and the Sussex Diamond Way.
From Gravesend to Eastbourne and from Pevensey to Rye, about 185 km in all: the Wealdway and the 1066 Country Walk.
Four walks through West Sussex, about 215 km in all: the West Sussex Literary Trail, the Downs Link, the Wey-South Path and Horsham Riverside Walk.
Three walks in the west of Sussex, about 180 km in all: the Serpent Trail across the Western Weald, the New Lipchis Way on to the coast at East Head, and the Selsey Tram Way from Chichester to Selsey.
The three rivers of Sussex a paddler can follow on the tide: the Arun from Pulborough to Littlehampton, the Ouse from Barcombe Mills through Lewes to Southease, and the Rother from Newenden to Rye Harbour, 64.5 km in all.
Every church in West Sussex: the cathedrals of Chichester and Arundel, Saxon Bosham and Sompting's Rhenish helm tower, flint churches with medieval wall paintings under the Downs and Horsham stone roofs in the Weald, with chapels and ruins along the way.
Every church in East Sussex: Saxon and Norman flint churches on the Downs, round towers in the Ouse valley, sandstone churches in the Weald and Victorian churches in Brighton and Hove, with chapels and ruins along the way.
